RV Dump Station Etiquette: The Unwritten Rules
Dump stations run on a shared code of conduct. Break it and you will hear about it, sometimes loudly. Follow it and you will fit right in. Here is what experienced RVers expect from everyone in line.
Be quick, or step aside
The dump lane is not the place to reorganize your basement storage or take a phone call. If there is a line, do your dump, do a basic rinse, and pull forward. Save the deep cleaning and tank flush for when nobody is waiting, or move to a spot that is not blocking the station.
Keep the potable water clean
The single fastest way to earn a glare is using the drinking-water spigot to rinse a sewer hose. That spigot fills fresh tanks that people drink from. Carry a separate rinse hose in a different color and never let the two meet.
Leave it cleaner than you found it
- Rinse any spillage down the drain
- Pack out your gloves and any packaging
- Cap the inlet if it has a cap
- Report a broken station to the host instead of just leaving it
Only tank waste goes down
Dump stations handle black and gray tank water. They are not for trash, cooking grease, or anything you would not run through your own plumbing. Stations close permanently when people abuse them, and every RVer in the area loses a stop.
Line up like you would at a gas pump
Pull in on the side your outlet is on, leave room for the rig behind you, and do not hold a spot while you run inside for snacks. Common sense, but worth saying.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the potable water hose to rinse my sewer hose?
No. That spigot fills drinking-water tanks. Carry a separate rinse hose, ideally a different color, and never let the two touch.
How long should I take at a dump station if others are waiting?
Just long enough to dump and do a basic rinse. Save deep cleaning or tank flushing for when no one is waiting, or pull forward first.
What can I put down an RV dump station besides tank waste?
Nothing. Dump stations handle black and gray tank water only, not trash, grease, or anything else. Stations close permanently when people abuse them.
What should I do if I find a dump station broken or dirty?
Report it to the campground or site host instead of just leaving. Reporting keeps the station open for the next RVer.
